Music

At Abbey Primary School, we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop skills and appreciate a wide variety of musical forms.

We embrace the National Curriculum purpose of study which states,

“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music…” National Curriculum 2014.

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it can play a key part in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society we live in and so the teaching and learning of music enables children to better understand the world around them. In addition to being a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be an academic and demanding subject. Ultimately, it can play an important role in helping children feel part of the Abbey Primary School community.

Intent:

To create a musical atmosphere by ensuring that all children, over the length of their education at Abbey Primary School, receive opportunities to play a musical instrument and give performances to other classes and parents.

To design a curriculum where children cover different elements of music, learn important vocabulary and develop an understanding on how music has changed throughout history.

To continue to review and update the music curriculum to ensure that staff and children experience good musical experiences and improve their knowledge and understanding.
