Geography

At Abbey Primary School, we recognise the value in understanding the world around us. Through meaningful teaching and exciting fieldwork opportunities outside of the classroom, we want our children to head into Key Stage 3 with the skillsets and motivation to be life-long geographers. 

Intent:

  • Develop an understanding of geography has a subject and its importance.
  • Develop geographical skills and knowledge
  • To ask and answer questions using evidence.
  • Develop fieldwork skills across each year group.
  • Develop pupils interest and knowledge of the local area and how it is different to other areas in the world.
  • Develop geographical concepts and vocabulary.

Implementation:

  • The geography lead will work alongside the HT and SLT to monitor and evaluate the teaching and learning of geography across the school.
  • Geography is taught in half termly units.
  • All areas of the National Curriculum will be covered.
  • Teachers will use the Kapow scheme of work to plan and deliver lessons.
  • Each unit of work will contain geographical skills and fieldwork.

Impact:

  • Children are equipped with Geographical skills and knowledge ready for KS3 and adult life
  • Children can compare and contrast human and physical features.
  • Children can name and locate physical elements of the world
  • Children understand how humans can impact the world.
  • Children have a sense of location and place around the UK and the wider world.
