At Abbey Primary School we have carefully designed an enquiry based history curriculum that fulfils the NC requirements and also ensures the needs of our pupils are met. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that sets out to develop historical concepts, knowledge and skills. Consideration has been given to diversity when choosing units to be taught. We aim to stimulate the children’s curiosity and interest in Britain’s past and the wider world. We want the children to find history fun and inspire them to research events and think about people and events of the past. Throughout their schools years we want to develop their chronological understanding so that they leave Y6 with a mental timeline of Britain’s past and world history. This will allow them to make connections between periods of time and ask and answer questions for themselves. Our curriculum makes links to local history whoever possible and we encourage the community to get involved in the children’s learning about what life was like in Bloxwich and the Walsall area.

Intent:

• To cover all the skills, knowledge and understanding of the NC
• For the children to develop a chronological understanding of events and periods in history.
• To be able to evaluate different sources and explain how these can be interpreted differently.
• To develop a wide range of historical vocabulary
• To have an awareness of local history and changes that have taken place.
• To have knowledge and understanding of significant figures and the impact they have had.
• To inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past
• To be able to ask and answer questions about the past draw their own conclusions
• Recognise similarities and differences.

Implementation:

• The History lead has created a bespoke curriculum using a variety of websites and schemes of work that is linked to the school’s curriculum drivers and values.
• The history lead will work alongside the HT and SLT to monitor and evaluate the teaching and learning of history across the school.
• History is taught in half termly units.
• All areas of the National Curriculum will be covered, and the following skills taught: (Historical interpretations, Historical investigations, Chronological understanding, Knowledge and understanding of Events, People and changes in the past, Presenting, Organising and Communicating)
• Cross curricular links will be made where possible to other areas of the curriculum.
• Teachers will use Medium Term plans, PowerPoints and resources provided which use an enquiry based approach.
• Education visits and visitors will be encouraged to enhance pupils’ experiences.
• First-hand sources will be used where possible.

• Children are equipped with historical skills and knowledge ready for KS3 and adult life.
• Children have developed an enjoyment of finding out about the past.
• Children can analyse sources of information.
• Children can ask challenging questions and develop own opinions.
• Children can make links between the past.
• Children have a good understanding of historical vocabulary.
