The Pupil Premium is an additional amount of money allocated to schools on a per pupil basis for any child who has been eligible for free school meals at any time during the preceding six years- known as Ever 6. It also applies to Looked After Children and, at a reduced rate, to the children of service families.

At Abbey Primary School, we have always had a philosophy of every child matters. This is still the case; all children should be enabled to achieve their full potential. Pupil premium children are a specific group within our school who receive focused and targeted support from allocated funding. Our aim is for this group to be making better than expected progress.

Responsibility for this group of pupils lies with the Pupil Premium Leaders, Mrs Wright and Mrs Richardson. Our named pupil premium governor is Mrs Phillips.

Our pupil premium spend is research based. Senior leaders and governors use the Education Endowment Foundation Toolkit to support our planning and spending. A large proportion of pupil premium spend is on staff with the aim of removing barriers to learning.

Barriers to learning may be social, emotional or academic. Additional support given is tailored to the needs of the child. Examples of support offered in school are:

• 1 to 1 sessions
• Small group teaching sessions
• Access to ICT equipment
• Early language development intervention
• Home visits by an attendance officer
• Specialist trained staff
• Smaller teaching group sizes where staff focus on high quality written and oral feedback
• Family support offered by the School Enrichment and Engagement Co-ordinator

Is your child eligible?

Children are eligible if their parents are in receipt of any of these benefits:

• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit (provided families are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
• Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after families stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
• Universal credit

In addition, a child will be eligible if they have been looked after by the local authority for at least one day or have been adopted from care or they have left care under a special guardianship order or residence order.

What is the Early Years Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium provides extra funding direct to schools to target support for named children. This additional support has been available to our older children for some time but is new for Nursery children. As a school we carefully track all children who qualify for this funding and ensure that the money is spent providing additional support. This includes specialist practitioner support, smaller group sizes, one to one tuition and additional resources.
