Welcome to Year 5
Teacher: Mrs. Sanders
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Amphlett-Rolls
In Year 5 we aim to continue to develop children’s love of learning through continuing to develop skills and abilities in a wide range of subjects.
In English we follow the RWI: Literacy and Language scheme where we continue to develop and foster their love of reading and writing. We also continue to embed their understanding of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
This year Reading is our focus and we are working hard to develop a lifelong love of reading in our class. We are currently enjoying reading Project X books in our Reading sessions. We enjoy following Max, Tiger, Cat & Ant on their adventures. As well as Project X we enjoy choosing books to read from our vast array of reading material. We enjoy our class read and share that together daily.
In Maths we follow the Big Maths scheme for Number and also study outer Maths such as: geometry, statistics and measures, algebra and ratio.
Our topic for the Autumn Term was ‘The Victorians’. We particularly enjoyed our Stunning Start which was a Victorian Day. We experienced Victorian cooking, sewing, making podge rugs, Victorian games and a Victorian school day which is where we found out about how strict the teachers were.
In D&T we have been investigating, designing, making and evaluating hats. These are our final hats - what do you think?
In English we have been looking at persuasive writing. We researched, debated and wrote persuasive letters about Zoos. We sent our letters to the WWF and were thrilled to receive a reply.
Our topic for the Spring Term is Climatic Extremes. We have really enjoyed the beginning to our topic which has included ice painting, finding Shackleton clues in the ice and a visit from Dan from Wide Horizons where we had to pitch canvas tents without any pegs or instructions and ski across the field in pairs or in teams of three.
