Early Years

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Our Vision

In Early Years at Abbey Primary School we pride ourselves on providing a safe and nurturing environment for all children.  We want our children to be happy, confident and independent learners who enjoy coming to school.

We believe that learning should be engaging, exciting and suitably challenging to develop children’s thinking and problem solving skills.

We are committed to working in partnership with families to enable each child to reach their full potential.

About our Early Years Department

We are proud of our Early Years department at Abbey Primary.
In Early Years we want our children to come to school every day excited and interested to learn and play. We want the children to be ready to explore their surroundings, keen to develop their minds and understand the world around them.  We will provide stimulating and challenging activities which ensure all children progress.
We are rated good by OFTSED (2019) and have recently (Feb 2020) achieved the Early Years Quality Mark with the nationally recognised Achievement for All Programme.
Visitors to our Early Years setting have said,

The children are a credit to you, happily engaged in their personalised learning journey, surrounded by a super environment and staff team that inspire them to work at the highest level.  It was evident that the children are at the heart of all that you do and it is clear that you are having a huge impact on the lives, experiences and life chances of the young people and families in your care. The school and Early years’ department is a hive of activity, and one in which the whole community clearly takes pride. The caring ethos which abounds, provides that safe and secure environment in which children are able to learn, be challenged and encouraged to shine be it academically or socially.”                                                                             (Sue Burrows Deputy Regional Lead – West AFA, February 2020).

All EYFS children follow “Development Matters” Curriculum which goes from Birth to 5yrs. Curriculum is split into 7 areas of Learning.

Prime areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive Arts and Design

As well as this – particular focus is paid to developing and encouraging the ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning

  • Playing and Exploring
  • Active Learning
  • Creating and Thinking critically

We work hard to harness children’s natural enthusiasm by planning activities and providing resources which link to the interests and favourite topics of the children.

We are great lovers of the outdoors in the EYFS. The children have daily access to our brilliant outdoor learning environment to support their learning. They have construction resources, den making equipment, a mud kitchen, large mark making opportunities and much more out there. We are great believers in outdoor learning at Abbey Primary School!

The children in the EYFS share the same themes and topics and base their half termly learning around these. This year our topics are, All About Me, Festivals and Celebrations, Traditional Tales, The Farm, Pirates and Princesses and Holidays.

Abbey Nursery

Our Nursery children (3-4 years) come into school every day and work with Miss Taylor, Mrs Jones and Mrs Webster (EYFS apprentice).  They have settled in well and enjoy a wide range of fun and stimulating activities that are planned around the children’s interests.

Abbey Reception

The children in Reception are looked after by Miss Bullock, Miss Brunell and Mrs Webster.
The children have a stimulating and enriched learning experience and this may include meeting special visitors, trips in and around the local area as well as further afield and many outdoor learning experiences.
